The Amazon Tap is a portable bluetooth speaker with built-in Alexa capability. It is the latest generation of smart speakers on the market today to combine voice-control with portability.

Unlike the Amazon Echo, you can’t just sit in your room and command the Amazon Tap to play music. To activate Alexa, you tap the microphone button, hence its name. There are tons of ways for you to listen to music through the Tap though. One of them is by connecting to Wi-Fi and using Amazon’s music service to listen to music. So if you’re an Amazon Prime customer, or if you’ve purchased music on Amazon, all of your songs are accessible to you by “tapping” the microphone and asking Alexa to play any of them.

Let’s take a look at some of the key features of the Amazon Tap.

Amazon Tap’s Awesome Features

Intelligently Designed

The Amazon Tap is a sleek, cylindrical black speaker wrapped in mesh fabric, with the Amazon logo on the bottom. It has a built-in battery which lasts between 8 to 9 hours.

You charge the Tap with the provided charging stand. Simply place it on the stand any way you like and it will begin charging. So after a day of use, all you need to do is set the Tap on its stand. There are no cords or buttons to worry about, it’s that simple.

One cool feature of the Tap is that it’ll work even while it’s charging. It does have an external port near the base, so you can charge it via a USB cable if you wish to. That way, if you’re on the road without access to the charging stand, you can plug the Tap into a computer or laptop’s USB port and let it do its thing.

You can get a protective sleeve (like the Amazon Tap Sling) for just a few dollars more from Amazon, and they come in a range of appealing colors. Using one of these sleeves protects the Tap when using it on the go. It comes with a provided hook so you can hang it anywhere you like.

User-Friendly Controls

At the top of the Amazon Tap are standard controls for pause, play, forwards and backwards. With these buttons, you can manually control your music without speaking to Alexa.

Like all smart gadgets, the Tap has an accompanying app (Android, iOS, Amazon devices) which you can download. There is also a computer version of the app which you can access from any PC. The app is multi-functional and keeps a record of all the tasks you’ve given to the Tap – from playing music to reading you the news.

The Tap can be used as a Bluetooth speaker. Just connect it to any smart device and you can play music directly from your phone or tablet. The Tap also has a 3.5mm audio input port below the power button for connecting another audio device as the source.

Excellent Sound Quality

The Tap’s 360 omnidirectional sound is excellent and sounds great no matter which way the Tap is facing. The sound is clear and crisp – and is rather similar to the Amazon Echo. The Tap is particularly ideal for spoken word content. Alexa’s voice is clear and easy to hear from anywhere.

Apart from listening to music, you can also listen to the news or eBooks (via Audible Books). You can tune in to your favorite radio station, podcast, Spotify and other music services. Need to get the latest weather update? Ask the Tap. Not sure how much battery is left in the Tap? Just ask Alexa. It’s that simple.

The Tap also functions as a personal assistant. Use it to set up your appointments, update your to-do list or set reminders. It also controls your smart home devices such as your lights and thermostat by connecting to the app on your smart device.

  • Portable device with 9 hours of battery life.
  • Improved Alexa service.
  • Excellent sound quality.
  • You have to push the microphone button to activate Alexa.

Final Thoughts

The Echo is perfect for people who didn’t like the fact that Alexa was always “on” in the Amazon Echo. In a way, the Tap offers more privacy, but at a cost of responsiveness. If you can deal with manual activation, then the Amazon Tap does what you want it to do with just a tap of a button.
